Photos show severity of flooding in Rio Grande Valley

A strong line of thunderstorms Monday night caused widespread flooding in the Rio Grande Valley.

The storms began Monday night and lasted until the early morning hours of Tuesday. The region received between six inches and 1 foot of rain, according to a valleycentral.com article.

Many residents lost power and found themselves surrounded by large amounts of water.

“When it started coming in, it looked really scary,” Raymondville resident Elizabeth Barnhart told mySA about the rising flood waters. “I jumped out of my skin several times when the lighting hit.”

Raymondville is a town of about 11,200 in Willacy County. Photos show the town was not spared from the flooding.

“It’s a sad situation for our small community,” Barnhart said. “People had to be rescued from their homes due to water entering their homes. A lot of citizens are still trapped in their homes due to the flood. It’s not business as usual in Willacy County, but little by little we will get there.”
